70 Year Yarns

70 Years

Celebrating the people and personalities behind Ramsey Bros

Everyone loves a good yarn. So, to celebrate our 70th anniversary in 2020, we’ve decided to share some the best we’ve heard along the way. There are tales of tenacity and tragedy, stories that will make you laugh until you cry and others that will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. Yarns remind us that the human spirit is nothing less than extraordinary. And the more you learn about another person’s life, the more you discover about your own. Enjoy.

The Candyman can

Mark Candy can teach you a thing or two about resilience. The small business owner, based in Mannum on the River Murray, very nearly lost his business as a result of one extraordinary incident.

Oversize, overmass, over the Bridge

There is the race that stops a nation (Melbourne Cup) but do you know about the tractor that halts a bridge? The Swanport Bridge in Murray Bridge to be precise.

When Pilko met Mark…

It was 20 years ago. On 21 February 2000 (to be precise). At the official opening of the new (and current) Ramsey Bros dealership in Cleve. Father of four, Wayne “Pilko” Pilgrim had been driving trucks for seven years.

Tractors on Parade

The year was 1984 and out the front of the Ramsey Bros dealership in Cleve, six Mercedes Benz tractors waited patiently while they went through their final checks and polishes before being driven slowly in single file to the Eyre Peninsula Field Days.

Allis-Chalmers tried and tested over half a century

There is no doubt that Warramboo broadacre farmer, Rolf Hagedorn knows his tractors. He bought the first Allis-Chalmers 7040 (160hp) to roll out of the Ramsey Bros dealership back in 1976...

We’re going to need wider gates…

Do you remember that classic deadpan line from the movie, Jaws: “You’re going to need a bigger boat”? Well at Ramsey Bros, that quote has been tweaked a little and is now used to describe what happens when farmers bring home a shiny, new piece of farm machinery...

The Stock and Furniture Express

With a livestock run already in place, the Ramsey Bros team saw a golden opportunity to leverage their transport business and help meet the needs of the local community eager to make the most of the new, more reliable and convenient electricity supply.

These Are My Scales

Some people have special, hidden talents. Bob ‘Bobby’ Rehn was an old-school salesman working with Ramsey Bros for 30 years until his retirement in 2006. Before this, he was a stock agent with a rare gift for sizing up more than most.

O Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz

“It was one hell of a memorable night,” says Eddy Ward, Ramsey Bros Director, recalling the time he witnessed the ultimate triumph of the underdog… When you think of traditional farm machinery, the name Mercedes Benz - synonymous with upmarket, European-styled cars with a hefty price tag - is not usually front of mind.
